Cruz Takes Aim at Trump to Begin Republican Debate

Texas senator Ted Cruz addressed “the elephant not in the room” to kick off Thursday night’s FOX News-Google debate, doing his best mimicry of Donald Trump in his opening answer.

“I’m a maniac, and everyone on this stage is stupid, fat, and ugly. And Ben, you’re a terrible surgeon,” Cruz joked. “Now that we’ve gotten the Donald Trump portion out of the way …”

The FOX moderators and debate audience received the lightheartedness well, with laughter and applause.

Trump elected to pass on the forum, the last such event before the state caucuses Monday. He instead held a counterprogramming event, advertised to fundraise for “the Veterans and Wounded Warriors” — though as THE WEEKLY STANDARD’s John McCormack notes, the financial aims of Trump’s program have been questioned.

Cruz also pledged to make Iowa “fly-to” country instead of flyover country if he’s elected president, making one last appeal to caucus goers before Monday’s vote. The text of Cruz’s full answer follows, with video below.

Let me say at the outset to the men and women of Iowa, thank you for the incredible hospitality the last year. By Monday, you will have welcomed me into all 99 counties in Iowa. You will have welcomed my dad to preach at your churches. You will have welcomed Heidi and our girls Caroline and Catherine into your homes. And I am so grateful for the seriousness, for the diligence with which the men and women of Iowa approach this process. If I am elected president, keep an eye on the tarmac, because I’ll be back. Because Iowa, in 2017, will not be flyover country — it will be fly-to country. Now, secondly, let me say — I’m a maniac, and everyone on this stage is stupid, fat, and ugly. And Ben, you’re a terrible surgeon. Now that we’ve gotten the Donald Trump portion out of the way … I want to thank everyone here for showing the men and women of Iowa the respect to show up and make the case to the people of this state and the people of this country why each of us believe we would make the best Commander in Chief.
