Highway worker dies in crash; I-95 traffic slows to crawl

A Maryland Transportation Authority worker was struck and killed while working on southbound Interstate 95 in White Marsh, and traffic is backed up six miles heading into Baltimore, officials said.

The Maryland State Police said in a news release that shortly after 2 p.m., a two-man MdTA crew were collecting debris in the left shoulder lane of the interstate when a gray 2007 Mazda lost control and hit the highway median near one of the workers. The car slid along the median and struck the worker, whose name was withheld pending family notification.

The worker was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Mazda, 35-year-old Kathryn Eileen Cote of Salisbury, was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

State police said the investigation is continuing.

Currently, the two left lanes of southbound I-95 are closed, and the far left lane of northbound I-95 is closed around the mile-70 marker just after the Mountain Road exit.

MdTA officials said the back-up heading south is at least six miles.
