Unemployment fell to just 2 percent in Hawaii in May, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday, the lowest jobless rate for any state on record going back to 1976.
Four other states also enjoyed their own record low unemployment in May: California at 4.2 percent, Idaho at 2.9 percent, Oregon at 4.1 percent, and Wisconsin at 2.8 percent.
Nationwide, unemployment was just 3.8 percent in May, tied for the lowest such rate since 1969.
Not all the country has shared equally in the labor market gains. Joblessness is above 7 percent in Alaska, and it’s around 5 percent, still, in New Mexico and Nevada.
But other places are seeing the best unemployment rates they’ve ever had, including in upper New England and parts of the midwest.
