Rep. Barabara Comstock, R-Va., beat back conservative primary challenger Shak Hill to defend her House seat this fall.
Comstock will face off against Democratic state Sen. Jennifer Wexton in Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, which voted for Hillary Clinton by 10 points in 2016.
The suburban district’s support for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam in 2017, as well as its centrist voters’ continued antipathy toward President Trump, has made it one of the Democrats’ top targets in the midterm elections.
Adjustments Comstock made to distance herself from Trump irked some conservatives, attracting a primary opponent. While Comstock was always heavily favored in the primary, she did have to hit back against Hill in ads to minimize the risk of an upset.
Democrats spent nearly $4 million in the primary campaign for the right to take on Comstock. The general election fight is currently rated a toss-up.
