Puppet-based Broadway musical “Avenue Q” will get political next week by hosting a mock presidential debate right before the real one, complete with puppets of the two presidential candidates.
The musical will hold a town hall-style debate on Monday, Sept. 26, at the New World Stages in New York City’s theater district, hours before Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump take the stage across town for the first presidential debate.
According to Broadway World, the event will touch on issues central to both the musical and the 2016 election cycle, like religion, race and unemployment.
It will also feature a Q&A with some of the other “Avenue Q” puppets and performers, including Republican Wall Street trader Rod and Japanese immigrant Christmas Day.
The Clinton and Trump puppets were designed by Rick Lyon, an original “Avenue Q” cast member and the mastermind behind the original puppets’ designs.
“Avenue Q,” which won the 2004 Tony for Best Musical, featured puppets of George W. Bush and John Kerry during that year’s presidential cycle.
