Elton John accuses Vatican of ‘hypocrisy’ for refusing to bless same-sex unions

Elton John isn’t feeling the love tonight for the Vatican.

The British singer slammed the Vatican’s recent pronouncement, approved by Pope Francis and made public on Monday, that the Catholic Church cannot bless what it termed the “sin” of same-sex marriages as “hypocrisy.”

“How can the Vatican refuse to bless gay marriages because they ‘are sin,’ yet happily make a profit from investing millions in Rocketman — a film which celebrates my finding happiness from my marriage to David??” John tweeted, adding the hashtag “hypocrisy” and tagging both the Vatican’s news service and the supreme pontiff himself.

The post also included screenshots of two articles. A recent article from the Guardian reporting the Vatican’s stance on same-sex marriage was juxtaposed with a 2019 Daily Beast report detailing the millions of dollars the Vatican reportedly spent on Rocketman, a biopic of John that portrays gay sex.

VATICAN: CATHOLIC CHURCH ‘CANNOT BLESS SIN’ OF SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

The Vatican’s refusal to bless same-sex unions has been met with criticism from those on the Left, who accused the policy of being regressive.

“Having sin be explicitly included in this statement kind of brings us back to zero,” Ross Murray, director of news and faith initiatives at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, told the Associated Press.

The Vatican’s recent stance clashes with comments the pope previously made signaling support for same-sex civil unions.

“Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family,” he said in Francesco, an Italian documentary released last year. “They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable because of it.”

Those on the Left have largely viewed Francis as an ally due to his liberal stances on political issues such as climate change and the death penalty.
