A hostage situation at the Oklahoma County Detention Center resulted in the shooting death of an inmate, according to the Oklahoma City Police Department.
A jail employee was taken hostage by at least one inmate on Saturday during pill pass and taken hostage, according to KOCO. The inmate took the correctional officer’s radio and keys and released other inmates, at which point the Oklahoma City Police Department and the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, Greg Williams, the administrator for the Oklahoma County Jail Trust, told the outlet.
Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson III said the officers tried to deescalate the hostage situation. But shots were fired after the inmate had the correctional officer in a “hostage position” and held an object to his neck, the sheriff said.

Officers shot and killed the suspect, according to a statement by the police. The employee who was held hostage has been rescued and is receiving treatment for his injuries, authorities added.
The inmate who is accused of holding the officer hostage can be heard voicing grievances with his treatment at the detention center in video obtained by KFOR.
“We can’t take showers,” the suspect is heard saying at one point.

An investigation is in the preliminary stages, and many details are not yet available, Police Chief Wade Gourley said at a press conference Saturday evening.
Williams said he cannot confirm a motive at this time and that the jail will likely remain on lockdown for the remainder of the evening. The correctional officer taken hostage was taken to the hospital for treatment. He walked out of the jail on his own and is doing fine, Williams said.
