Man sentenced in attack on police officer

A 38-year-old Fredericksburg, Va., man was sentenced to 29 years in prison for trying to rob and then shooting an off-duty D.C. police officer in December 2003.

Eddie L. Mathis Jr. was convicted of assault and weapons charges by a D.C. Superior Court jury in July.

He was found guilty of attacking Officer Devinci Wooden when Wooden stopped at a gas station in Southeast D.C.

Mathis fled the gas station after a shootout, in which he was shot in the waist. He was found in a nearby apartment.
