Connecticut first state to vaccinate half of all adults, governor says

Connecticut is the first state to vaccinate half its adult population fully, according to its governor.

“Connecticut is the 1st state in the nation to fully vaccinate more than 50% of all adults over the age of 18,” Gov. Ned Lamont tweeted Monday afternoon. “Congrats to everyone who has been vaccinated so far! #KeepItUpCT.”

The most recently available data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows 3,321,709 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the state, representing a doses-administered rate of 93,168 per every 100,000 people in the state’s population.

HALF OF ADULT POPULATION IN US HAS RECEIVED AT LEAST ONE VACCINE DOSE

On April 18, the United States crossed a milestone in vaccination rates when the CDC reported that half of the adult U.S. population had received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. The Food and Drug Administration has granted emergency use authorization to three COVID-19 vaccines, two of which, those manufactured by Pfizer and Moderna, require a two-dose regimen in order for a recipient to be considered “fully vaccinated.”

The third vaccine, a one-dose jab from Johnson & Johnson, was temporarily paused last month after it was linked to the development of rare blood clots in a handful of cases, mostly women between the ages of 18 and 49. Federal regulators lifted the pause 10 days later but added a warning label for women under 50.

Daily vaccination rates slowed in recent weeks as supply began to outstrip demand, causing the federal government to shift from building out vaccination centers to furthering an information campaign.

“We’ve gotten vaccinations to those most at risk and those most eager to get vaccinated as quickly as possible, and we will continue those efforts,” White House coronavirus czar Jeff Zients told reporters last week, according to multiple outlets. “But we know reaching other populations will take time and focus.”

There have been more than 32 million cases of COVID-19 in the U.S., and 574,220 deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the CDC. More than 247 million vaccines have been administered, the agency says.
