Preliminary work has begun on a ramp that will carry traffic on Franconia Road over South Van Dorn Street and eliminate backups at the traffic lights of the intersection in Alexandria.

“It’s the front door to the second-largest planned community (Kingstowne) in Fairfax County, and it does not work well,” said Fairfax County Supervisor Dana Kauffman, whose district includes the intersection.
