Biden says decision on 2024 reelection bid to come after midterm elections

President Joe Biden won’t make a decision on whether he’ll run for a second term in 2024 until after the midterm elections are over, he told CNN in a rare TV interview on Tuesday.

The White House has been adamant that Biden intends to run for reelection in 2024, and the president has repeatedly said he plans to do so. However, the 79-year-old clarified last month that it’s still “too early” to make a “firm decision,” reiterating that sentiment to CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday that a decision is still forthcoming.

SHOULD BIDEN RUN AGAIN IN 2024? HERE’S WHAT DEMOCRATS ARE SAYING

“After [the midterm elections are] done in November, then I’m going to be in the process of deciding,” Biden said.

When asked if a possible reelection bid from former President Donald Trump would influence his decision, Biden remained confident in his chances.

“I believe I can beat Donald Trump again,” Biden said.

Neither Biden nor Trump has announced a reelection bid, although the two have both hinted that they intend to run again, raising questions about whether the country will witness a rematch between the two.

Biden’s comments come on the heels of recent polling that shows a majority (64%) of Democrats would prefer a different nominee than Biden in 2024, with 94% of young Democrats ages 18-29 saying they want someone else on the ticket, according to a poll from the New York Times and Siena College. Some Democratic lawmakers have also come out against a Biden reelection bid, urging the party to look to “new blood” in the next election cycle.

Polls suggest Republicans are also itching for a new candidate, with 61% of voters saying Trump should not run again, compared to just 35% who think he should seek another term, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll.
