‘Examining Politics’ July 19: Secretary of State Pompeo from Buenos Aires

Larry O’Connor is traveling to Latin America with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for the next several days and will be sending dispatches to “Examining Politics” on a regular basis including today’s exclusive one-on-one with Pompeo. The secretary of state talks about the growing threat from Iran after the Islamic Republic’s recent provocative escalations. Pompeo confirms that it’s time to start escorting tankers in the Strait of Hormuz with multinational military vessels. Pompeo also had strong words for his predecessor’s penchant for engaging directly with Iran’s foreign minister as well as former Vice President Joe Biden’s contention that he hears from foreign leaders that they are worried about the U.S. Pompeo also comments on the reports that Sen. Rand Paul is looking to be a special envoy to Iran. Pompeo also discusses religious freedom and the priority he has given that issue during his tenure as well as the challenges we face dealing with countries who are vital strategic allies yet still fall short with this very issue.
