Lawmakers ‘horrified’ after Pelosi’s husband ‘violently assaulted’

Lawmakers expressed outrage after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband was “violently assaulted” in their San Francisco home early Friday.

Paul Pelosi, 82, was hospitalized following the attack but is “expected to make a full recovery,” according to Nancy Pelosi’s spokesman Drew Hammill. Subsequent reporting indicates he suffered serious injuries and is undergoing brain surgery.

A suspect, David Depape, has been apprehended in the assault, and U.S. Capitol Police are working with the FBI and the San Francisco Police Department to investigate the incident.

‘WHERE IS NANCY?’: PAUL PELOSI INTRUDER WANTED TO KNOW WHERE SPEAKER WAS BEFORE ATTACK

The Pelosi family has received an outpouring of support from lawmakers of both parties in response to the attack.

“What happened to Paul Pelosi was a dastardly act. I spoke with Speaker Pelosi earlier this morning and conveyed my deepest concern and heartfelt wishes to her husband and their family, and I wish him a speedy recovery,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said on Twitter.

“Horrified and disgusted by the reports that Paul Pelosi was assaulted in his and Speaker Pelosi’s home last night,” tweeted Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). “Grateful to hear that Paul is on track to make a full recovery and that law enforcement including our stellar Capitol Police are on the case.”

The assailant shouted, “Where is Nancy?”, after breaking into the couple’s home, a source told the Associated Press. The House speaker was in Washington, D.C., with a protective detail at the time.

“Sickened by the attack on Paul Pelosi at the family’s SF home. While the investigation is ongoing, first reports indicate the Speaker was the intended target of this horrible violence,” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) tweeted. “Praying for Paul’s swift recovery, and my thoughts are with the Speaker and their family.”

A spokesman for Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said the House minority leader has reached out to Pelosi. “He’s praying for a full recovery and is thankful they caught the assailant,” Mark Bednar said in a statement.

A long list of lawmakers echoed this sentiment in statements posted to Twitter.

“Wishing @SpeakerPelosi’s husband, Paul, a very speedy recovery from his injuries,” said Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA), the chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus.

“My thoughts and prayers are with @SpeakerPelosi, Paul, and the entire family. Sending wishes for a swift recovery. What a horrific situation,” said Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA), the assistant House Democratic leader.

“Shocking to hear what happened to Speaker Pelosi’s husband, Paul. Wishing him a speedy and full recovery,” said Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI).

“I join in praying for Paul Pelosi’s full and quick recovery after the attack that occurred in San Francisco this morning. My thoughts are with the Speaker and the Pelosi family during this difficult time,” said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD).

Multiple lawmakers condemned the attack as politically motivated.

“An attack on any member’s family is an attack on all of Congress. Shannon and I are praying for a speedy recovery for Paul and comfort for the Pelosi family,” Rep. Rodney Davis said. “It’s incumbent upon all of us to condemn this attack and do everything we can to end all politically-motivated violence.”

“To hear that the suspect allegedly asked ‘Where’s Nancy?’ just as many did on January 6th is even more unnerving. Another apparent instance of political violence in America. This must stop,” said Rep. John Yarmuth.
