STORYLINE:
Smoke was seen rising over the Syrian city of Kobani on Thursday, following reports that US led coalition aircraft were bombing Islamic State (IS) group positions in the area.
The militant group’s black flag was still flying on top of a hill in the area where it was placed three days ago when the group advanced on east Kobani.
The IS assault on the strategic Syrian town has forced some 200 thousand people to flee across the frontier into Turkey, in one of the biggest exoduses of Syria’s civil war.
Thousands of Kurdish Syrians are now in makeshift refugee camps in Suruc, in the Turkish province of Sanliurfa.
Kobani has been under assault by extremists since mid-September and is being defended by fighters of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, or YPK.
Meanwhile, there was a strong Turkish army presence in the area, including more than a dozen tanks and armed vehicles positioned on the hills across the border from Kobani.
