Kudos to Maryland’s Olympians

Michael Phelps

  • Home: Baltimore

  • Achievement: Phelps set the record of the most gold medals won at a single Olympics with the eight golds he won the at Beijing Games, gaining international acclaim. Phelps holds seven world records in swimming and, overall, has won 16 Olympic medals: 14 gold and two bronze.

Katie Hoff

  • Home: Baltimore
  • Sport: Swimming
  • Achievement: Hoff won three medals at the Beijing Olympics, placing second in the 400-meter freestyle and third in 400-meter individual medley. Hoff was also part of the third-place 4-by-200 meter freestyle relay team. Hoff holds the American record in the 200-meter individual medley.

Jessica Long

  • Home: Baltimore
  • Sport: Swimming
  • Achievement: At the 2008 Paralympic Games Beijing, Long won the gold medal and set the world record in the 400-meter freestyle, the 100-meter freestyle and the 200-meter individual medley. She also won gold in the 100-meter butterfly, silver in the 100-meter backstroke and bronze in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Carmelo Anthony

  • Hometown: Baltimore
  • Sport: Basketball
  • Achievement: Anthony, who grew up in Baltimore, was a member of the gold medal-winning U.S. Men’s Basketball Team at the Beijing Games. Anthony scored 13 points in the United State’s win over Spain in the gold medal game. The U.S. team was 8-0 in the Olympics, with Anthony averaging 11.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.

Bob Malaythong

  • Hometown: Rockville
  • Sport: Badminton
  • Achievement: The Laos native and partner Howard Bach reached the badminton quarterfinals — the furthest an American team had ever advanced — before losing to China.
