WATCH: Highway 401 near Toronto experiences 100 car pileup

Highway 401 near Toronto experienced a 100 car pileup amid blizzard conditions.

Toronto was one of the victims of a “bomb cyclone” that has wrought havoc over great swathes of North America. Christmas travelers were effected by air and on land, through conditions that grounded aircraft and made roads impassable. Hundreds were caught on icy roads on Highway 401, leading to a colossal pileup of over 100 cars.

A dashcam from one of these 100 vehicles caught one of the many collisions, with the vehicle being seen losing control and plowing into a car and truck.

Police and meteorologists urged motorists to stay away from the highway completely, labeling the whole highway unsafe. The Ontario Provincial Police released images of the carnage, along with warnings to stay away.

Chief Meteorologist for the Weather Network, Chris Scott, warned motorists earlier in the day not to use the highway.

“Can’t say this strongly enough — this afternoon and evening will be one of the worst driving situations I’ve ever seen for the 401 east of Toronto through Kingston. Anyone on the road should be prepared to be stranded by blizzard conditions,” he tweeted.

A similar pileup occurred on the Ohio turnpike, also involving over 100 vehicles. Videos from the scene showed one vehicle lifted into the air, tail end up.
