Top voter priority is reducing the deficit, not building a wall

The most important priority for U.S. voters isn’t building a border wall or even healthcare reform — instead, most think the government should focus on reducing the national debt.

A Morning Consult-Politico poll released Wednesday found that 75 percent of registered voters think that reducing the annual budget deficit is either a top priority or an important priority. The combined percentage for deficit reduction was higher than any other major issue raised in the poll.

For example, 73 percent of voters said healthcare reform is a top or important priority. Finding a permanent solution for former recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program was a top or important priority for 54 percent of voters, the same percentage of voters who prioritized a climate change bill.

Just 41 percent of voters prioritized impeachment proceedings against President Trump. But most voters also don’t see Trump’s push for a border wall as a priority — just 42 percent of voters said that was a top or important issue.

A majority of voters, 51 percent, said passing new gun restrictions is a priority.

The online survey was taken Jan. 25-27, among 1,997 registered voters. The poll had a 2 percentage point margin of error.
