Fulton County district attorney expects to take action against Trump ‘within a year’

A district attorney tasked with investigating former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn Georgia’s 2020 presidential election said she expects to take action “within a year.”

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is focusing on a special purpose grand jury that was greenlighted by a judge on Jan. 24, which will authorize her to issue subpoenas to compel witnesses to testify. She expects to issue several subpoenas throughout the summer as the investigation ramps up.

“We realize that we’re coming to a place that there are enough people that will require a subpoena for us to speak to or for us to be able to get information,” Willis said in a Thursday interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

A jury of 16 to 23 people is set to commence on May 2 and will not exceed 12 months, according to court documents.

FULTON COUNTY DA REQUESTS FBI HELP FOLLOWING TRUMP COMMENTS

“There’s a possibility that after two months we’ll have all the information we need to press forward. There’s a possibility that after week one that some appellate issue will come and there’s a halt,” Willis said.

Willis is investigating comments Trump allegedly made during a Jan. 2, 2021, phone call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in which the then president urged him to “find” the 11,780 votes he needed to win the state. Though a specific list of possible witnesses is unavailable, it’s likely that Raffensperger will be among those asked to testify.

The district attorney is looking into several possible state law violations, including election fraud, intentional interference with the performance of election duties, and conspiracy.

Comments Trump, who has repeatedly dismissed concerns about his “perfect” call to Raffensperger, made at his rally in Texas last Saturday prompted Willis to request security from the FBI out of an obligation to ensure the “safety of those working on her investigation.”

“My staff and I will not be influenced or intimidated by anyone as this investigation moves forward,” Willis said in her letter to the FBI.

Trump alleged widespread voter fraud was responsible for his loss in several swing states, including Georgia. The Trump campaign pursued several lawsuits over the matter, the majority of which were tossed by federal judges.
