Woman who named son after Gavin Newsom says governor is running the state with ‘iron fist’

A good name is truly sooner lost than won.

Andrea Hedstrom, a lifelong Democrat who named her son “Gavin” in tribute to Gov. Gavin Newsom of California, is a part of the efforts to recall her former hero and blames him for the state’s condition.

“I do [blame Newsom for California’s current condition] at this point,” she told CNN during a Thursday afternoon broadcast of The Lead with Jake Tapper. “Newsom is the one that’s running California right now with an iron fist.”

Hedstrom has evolved into a vocal critic of the man who inspired her son’s name, rebuking the governor in a segment that aired on FOX 40 earlier this month.

“This is heartbreaking. This is a tragedy, and Newsom is the one that’s authoring this,” she told the local news outlet while confirming that she voted for him during his initial gubernatorial effort.

Despite her opposition to the governor, Hedstrom told Spectrum News 1 in December that she doesn’t regret naming her son Gavin, saying she “loves the name … [and] wouldn’t choose a different name.”

She told the outlet that once stay-at-home orders were put in place throughout the state, she began to “lose faith” in his leadership.

Newsom has gained bipartisan condemnation for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, and a petition to recall him has amassed more than 1 million of the 1.5 million required signatures in order to force an election.

The potential race has attracted attention from high-profile political figures across the nation, with former President Donald Trump reportedly considering playing a role.

“He is weighing holding rallies in California over the next couple of months,” according to a Bloomberg reporter.

The emerging front-runner for the GOP nomination, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, has attacked Newsom more vigorously in recent days, accusing him of creating “an education equality gap.”

“Our elitist Gov. Gavin Newsom has sat idly by while he has crafted an education equality gap that will haunt students their entire lives,” he said of the governor’s school reopening plan. “Classroom learning must be the norm, not the exception.”
