‘Short, simple and damning’: New York Times editorial board backs impeaching Trump

The New York Times editorial board is supporting President Trump’s impeachment, it announced in an opinion piece Saturday.

The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote this week on two articles of impeachment: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The New York Times called the articles of impeachment “short, simple and damning” while arguing that the president has “made it impossible for Congress to carry out fully its constitutionally mandated oversight role.”

The editorial board went on to describe Trump requesting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to launch an investigation into his political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, as a “textbook example of an impeachment offense,” arguing that it’s exactly “as the nation’s framers envisioned it.” They also pointed to the White House’s decision not to participate in the House’s inquiry, alleging that that decision “left Congress with no choice but to press ahead to a Senate trial.”

Should the articles pass in the House, which is expected, it will then go to the Senate, where the chamber will hold a trial. It takes a two-thirds vote in the Senate to remove the president from office.

The editorial boards of the Los Angeles Times, the Boston Globe, the New York Daily News, and the Philadelphia Inquirer have also called for Trump to be impeached.
