BELL GARDENS, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say the mayor of Bell Gardens has been shot but there’s no immediate word on his condition.

Employees at City Hall confirm that Daniel Crespo is the shooting victim.

Los Angeles County fire officials say paramedics were called to the 6300-block of East Gage Avenue shortly after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and took a man with a gunshot wound to the hospital.

Authorities say the shooting may have occurred at a townhome or apartment complex but details remain sketchy.

Bell Gardens is a suburb of about 43,000 located about 18 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

The city website says Crespo has been a county deputy probation officer for the past 15 years. He was elected to the City Council in 2001.
