Murphy on Trump’s America: ‘I don’t think you can take democracy for granted’

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., on Thursday warned President Trump’s policies could have severe consequences on a global level, including the dismantling of America’s democratic form of government.

“I can pick out all sorts of instances in history all across the world where this kind of conduct in this administration got you on a slippery slope to a very bad place. I don’t think you can take democracy for granted in this country,” Murphy told MSNBC host Chris Matthews during a town hall Thursday evening.

“This is still an experiment and so part of our mission is not just to fight back against Trump’s individual racist and divisive policies, but to remind people why we actually believe in self-determination and not let him get away with this potential slide to a different way of government.”

During the American University event in Washington, D.C., a student asked Murphy’s opinion on some labeling Trump fascist.

“I don’t know yet that I’m ready to go to that word, but clearly when you are trying to consolidate power, when you are stifling dissent, when you are running a government unapologetically by setting one group of people against each other and creating an argument for yourself in which someone else is to blame, whether it be immigration, whether it be racial minorities, that’s really troubling,” Murphy said.

Last week, Trump announced 17 executive actions, including taking steps to complete the wall at the U.S.-Mexico border and suspending refugee and asylum admissions from seven majority-Muslim countries.
