Kanye West’s Donda Academy nearly closes, reopens in the middle of school year

Donda Academy, the school founded by the rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, announced its closure for the remaining school year only to remain open.

Principal Jason Angell sent an email to parents Wednesday, obtained by the Times, announcing that there would be no school Thursday or for the rest of the year until next school year. The decision comes “at the discretion of our founder,” according to Angell. Hours later, however, the school sent a subsequent email announcing it would continue classes, beginning with a worship service welcome to parents.

The academy’s student population is 82, with a self-reported ratio of teachers that is 10:1. It reportedly costs $15,000 per year in tuition.

“With the help of our parents and community, we are back and returning with a vengeance,” the second email read. “The children of Donda are going to change the world. Apologies for the late email!”

The Christian school has a student-wide daily worship service and choir. The kindergarten through twelfth-grade curriculum includes core classes of language arts, math, and science, as well as “enrichment” classes including world language, visual art, film, and parkour, according to its website. Its motto is, “To be a reflection of God’s glory in the world.”

It got its name from Ye’s late mother Donda. None of Ye’s four children attend the academy.

The school’s basketball team was scheduled to compete in the Play By Play Classics basketball event in December, but the organization announced Tuesday it will no longer be hosting the team “in light of recent anti-Semitic statements by Kanye West.” Donda’s team is currently in its second year, with Ye founding the still-unaccredited school some three years ago.
