Al Sharpton: Trump wouldn’t implement zero tolerance immigration policy at Canadian border

Rev. Al Sharpton said Tuesday that President Trump wouldn’t dare enforce his zero tolerance policy toward illegal border crossings at the Canadian border.

Sharpton, joined by other civil rights leaders and Rep. Darren Soto, D-Fla., attacked Trump over the administration’s controversial policy which has resulted in increased family separations at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“I do not believe that President Trump would implement this at the Canadian border,” Sharpton said standing outside the U.S. Capitol. “There is the inference here that because these are children of color that there’s a different policy for them.”

Democrats have forged a united front on the issue, optimistic that the mounting political pressure could force Trump’s hand.

Sharpton’s press conference Tuesday marked the sixth straight day Democrats have amplified the issue, hitting the administration for a “wicked” and “insidious” policy. House and Senate Democrats visited detention facilities in Texas and California over the weekend and made the rounds on political talk shows.

By Tuesday, several Republicans started to speak out against the policy, from former first lady Laura Bush to Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah. Some have urged the president to at least temporarily halt the separations, aware of the political damage it could do to their chances of keeping the majority.
