Senators: Russian maneuvers pose ‘direct challenges to U.S. interests’

A Georgia senator has introduced a bipartisan resolution to hold Russia accountable for a recent series of aggressive military actions against the U.S.

The resolution, introduced by Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga., demands Russia immediately terminate its “dangerous and unprofessional” targeting of American troops. Perdue told the Washington Free Beacon, “We’ve recently seen Russian military personnel taunting U.S. military units with provocative military maneuvers.”

Sens. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., Ron Johnson, R-Wis., Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and Jim Risch, R-Idaho, all back the Senate resolution that calls on Russia to stop endangering U.S. forces that are operating lawfully in international territory.

“Under President Vladimir Putin, Russia has become increasingly assertive and aggressive militarily,” Perdue said in a statement. In April, the Pentagon called a Russian intercept “erratic and aggressive” when a warplane flew within 50 feet of an American aircraft.

Unprofessional and unsafe intercepts aren’t the only Russian acts of military aggression, according to the congressional resolution. Russia is also building up strategic locations such as the Black Sea, Eastern Mediterranean Sea, Syria, and the Arctic.

A buildup of cyber capabilities also gives Russia the ability to wage “crippling cyber attacks on the electric grid and other critical infrastructures of the United States,” according to the resolution.

The new congressional measure states Russia’s movements are meant to “deny United States access to key areas of Eurasia and often pose direct challenges to United States interests.”
