Miami’s Republican mayor won’t vote for Trump

Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado cited the discrimination he still feels today as a reason why he will not vote for Donald Trump in the November general election.

“No, of course not,” Regalado, born in Cuba, told the Miami Herald in an interview published Wednesday.

His post is a nonpartisan one, but Regalado is a declared Republican.

“He mistreats people, speaks derisively of people,” Regalado said of Trump. “A president’s biggest asset is the bully pulpit. This guy is capable of creating national and international chaos.”

Regalado, who has been the mayor of Miami since 2009, also said he wouldn’t vote for Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee.

“I’m not going to vote for one or the other,” he said, echoing fellow Miami Republicans like former Gov. Jeb Bush and U.S. Reps. Carlos Curbelo and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

In Miami, which often leans liberal with its Hispanic majority, Clinton trounces Trump. Statewide polls show the race is tied in Florida.

Miami is the second-largest city in Florida, which has 29 electoral votes in the general election. The Sunshine State is often seen as a must win swing state in order to win the presidency.

Regalado did say he will go to the polls on Election Day, even if he leaves the space for president blank.

“For senator, for representative, for anything else, yes. But this guy?” he said, voice trailing off, according to the interviewee.
