D.C. board of elections chairman to resign

D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics Chairman Togo West will resign, city officials have confirmed to The Washington Examiner.

West stepped into the role on short notice in July 2010. The board’s previous chairman, Errol Arthur, stepped down just weeks before the September Democratic primary, leaving the three-member board with only one member and unable to vote on any last-minute issues that could come up. Former Mayor Adrian Fenty acted quickly in nominating West to take over and the council put West on a fast-track for approval.

West could not immediately be reached Monday afternoon. An official in the Vince Gray administration who confirmed West’s departure said it was West’s decision and not the mayor’s, who will now have to find a replacement. The board, meanwhile, is still missing a member who must come from a minority party.

Last month, board of elections director Rokey Suleman unexpectedly resigned
