With shards of glass on his shirt and pants, a Parkville man insisted car-jackers had stolen his car before it hit and killed a Towson University freshman, court records show.
Matthew D. Miller, the 25-year-old charged in the fatal crash, never admitted to striking the student, police say, and invented his story of being car-jacked by three black men early Friday.
“His attitude was cocky and belligerent,” Baltimore County police wrote in court documents. “At no time did the defendant acknowledge that he was involved in a crash or struck anything or anyone.”
The crash killed Kevin Michael Ryan, 19, of Columbia, who was found onGoucher Boulevard near the TU campus.
Miller?s blood-alcohol content was .13 at 6 a.m. Friday, about four hours after the crash, according to court records. The legal limit is .08.
He faces a dozen charges, including driving under the influence of alcohol and causing life-threatening injuries while driving under the influence.
He was released on $50,000 bond.
Towson students plan to hold a vigil tonight on campus in honor of Ryan, a graduate of Atholton High School in Columbia.
“Whenever you have a death on campus, it affects a great number of students,” said Jenny Haley, president of Towson?s Student Government Association, which is organizing the vigil.
Pictures of Ryan swimming in a pool, building sandcastles at the beach and wearing his Boy Scout uniform were displayed on photo collages and in a slide show during a viewing Tuesday in Ellicott City.
The family, which declined to comment, has established a fund to create a scholarship in Ryan?s name for students attending Towson University.
“Kevin would be pleased to know others were being helped with their educational goals,” the family wrote on a tribute Web site.
“Our hopes are to build a lasting gift that bears fruit for many years to come.”
