News Summary: Samsung, LG bet on new display

SET ON TV: South Korean television manufacturers Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. are betting billions on new technology that promises thinner screens with eye-popping clarity. Sony showed off the first organic light-emitting diode display in 2007 but never followed up with a screen bigger than 11 inches.

PREVIOUS EFFORTS: Samsung and LG saw 3-D TV and Internet-connected sets flop, but they’re optimistic about the expensive new technology.
