South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham warned Wednesday the United States will continue on a war footing against Kim Jong Un “unless the world can stop North Korea.”
“President Trump has basically drawn a red line saying he’ll never allow North Korea to have an ICBM missile that can hit America with a nuclear weapon on top, he’s not going to let that happen — he’s not going to contain the threat, he’s going to stop the threat,” Graham told CBS.
Graham said he saw two scenarios that would prompt to the United States to respond with force against North Korea. Those include an attack on Guam or if they persist in developing an intercontinental ballistic missile that can hit the U.S. mainland with a nuclear weapon.
“We’re headed that way unless North Korea stops,” Graham said. “He [Trump] is going to pick homeland defense over regional stability and he has to.”
The South Carolina senator also insisted it is not the goal of the American president to change North Korea’s regime but to stop it from acquiring a nuclear weapon and offered a stern call to China to aid in that process.
“China should have two options: deal with the nut job in your backyard or realize there will be a war in your backyard,” Graham added.
Graham’s warning comes following Trump’s stern threat that the U.S. will meet Pyongyang “with fire and fury” if it continues to advance its nuclear weapons program or responds with physical action to recent economic sanctions levied by the U.N.
