Kate Winslet and director Sam Mendes seemed to be one of Hollywood’s golden couples, with seven years of marriage under their belts and nary a peep of scandal. So when their lawyers announced Monday in a statement that they had “separated earlier this year,” we were pretty surprised.

The statement maintained that “the split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement. Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children.” So … what went wrong?
