Metrobus operators soon will be required to prove their ability to drive their vehicles and their knowledge of the transit system’s rules and regulation if they want to stay behind the wheel.
As part of Metro’s response to a series of fatal bus crashes earlier this year, bus operators will have to take the recertification courses and tests every two to three years, officials said. Rail operators already must go through this process, but it had not been required of the bus operators. The recertification will be in addition to the mandatory one-day safety refresher courses Metro General Manager John Catoe has ordered for all employees in the wake of buses striking and killing four pedestrians.
