Matt Schlapp: Mercedes Schlapp would be ‘very open’ to replace Hope Hicks as White House communications director

American Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp said Thursday his wife, Mercedes Schlapp, would be “very open” to President Trump promoting her to White House communications director in the wake of Hope Hicks’ surprise exit.

“She’s going to be very open to anything the president wants her to do. Both she and I have been supporters of the president. We like his agenda and we’re proud of what he’s doing,” Schlapp told MSNBC, referring to his spouse who has served as White House director of strategic communications since September.

Matt Schlapp added his wife had found her stride within the Trump administration in her current role.

“She loves her job. She’s challenged by her job. The president is respectful to her. She loves the environment in which she works. She’s having a blast even though it is awfully tough. And when she comes home at night, I give her a cocktail. That’s my job,” he said.

But Schlapp admitted he had “no idea” who Trump was considering to fill the post after news broke Wednesday Hicks would be leaving the White House in the coming weeks.

“Those are big shoes to fill because Hope has been with Ivanka before President Trump and with the president since the very beginning of his campaign,” he said of the 29-year-old Trump confidant.

Mercedes Schlapp is a former Fox News contributor and worked as director of specialty media for former President George W. Bush.

Matt Schlapp found himself at the center of a public feud with former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele over the weekend regarding comments made about Steele’s race at the Conservative Political Action Conference, which Schlapp organized.
