2 dead, 3 critically injured in shooting at UNC-Charlotte

Police have a 22-year-old University of North Carolina-Charlotte student in custody Tuesday, after a shooting at the school that took the lives of two people.

The man has been identified as Trystan Andrew Terrell.

Authorities said a call came in about 4:40 p.m. that a man armed with a pistol shot several students in Kennedy Hall. The building houses administrative offices and classrooms.

“We responded. We were able to get into the building, quick enough, to where we actually took custody of the suspect. He was disarmed, and he was taken into custody by our officers,” said UNC-Charlotte campus police chief Jeffrey Baker.

Baker said two people were killed and three were in critical condition. One other person was hospitalized.

The gunman used a handgun and was not a known threat to campus police prior to the shooting, Baker said.

The campus had been on lockdown for hours as police searched the school. Only one person was believed to be involved in the shooting.

Baker credited his officers’ training for his immediately rushing into the building where the shooting was taking place to take down the threat.

“I can tell you that our officers are highly trained and retrained for this type of an incident. We are able to get to the building, and our officers immediately — one officer immediately went to the suspect to take him down,” he said.

Tuesday marked the last day of classes at the the university, which was was planning to hold a concert by rapper Waka Flocka Flame at the football stadium on Tuesday evening. The concert has been canceled.
