WASHINGTON (AP) — A top Education Department official is telling Congress that some colleges and universities are continuing to fail students by inadequately responding to campus sexual assault.

Catherine Lhamon (LAY’-muhn) is the department’s assistant secretary for civil rights. She says her office has investigated more than a hundred such cases since 2009. In those cases, she says schools have done things like retaliating against students for filing a sexual assault complaint, delaying investigations and allowing perpetrators to remain in class.
