PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Providence School District and the teachers union are taking their contract dispute to a mediator.
The 1,900-member Providence Teachers Union voted 611 to 182 Monday to reject the proposal.
Maribeth Calabro, president of the teachers union, said teachers questioned a provision of the proposed contract giving more autonomy to individual schools and establishing a new compensation system rewarding teachers for taking additional responsibility.
The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1prS8Av ) that Providence School Board President Keith Oliveira said he believes the contract rejection is related to the union’s internal politics.
