The local chain, which has eight locations in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, is opening its first shop in the county in Ballston.

The store likely will open in March, according to Ale Topchy, who will run the location with his wife, Traci.
The couple is looking for locations for two other branches in Clarendon, Ballston or Virginia Square, he said.
Arlington already hosts some upscale grocery stores, such as Whole Foods and Harris Teeter. Marvelous Market hopes to distinguish itself by being more easily accessible.
“It’s a similar quality to those other places without the madness of parking and trying to go throughthe lines,” Topchy said. “We’re aiming to be a neighborhood location; we want people to think of it as their market.”
The store sells a mix of prepared foods and grocery items, such as vinegars and coffees, and has an on-site bakery. The Ballston branch will be at 888 North Quincy St.
Topchy’s store will have a large selection of wine; the company also hopes to cater for area businesses.
“Having a focus on fresh merchandise is a trend that I don’t think is going to let up anytime soon,” said Herb Sorensen, global scientific director of Shopper Insights for TNS North America.
But Sorensen said places like Marvelous Market that target upscale clientele may see competitors arise with lower pricing.
