Sanders notches home state victory in Vermont

Sen. Bernie Sanders won a decisive victory in his home state of Vermont Tuesday, kicking off what is otherwise expected to be a disappointing day for the Democratic socialist.

Sanders had been polling an average of 75 points ahead of his rival, according to RealClearPolitics.

Despite the impressive margin of victory in his home state, Sanders was facing long odds in the spate of southern primaries set for Super Tuesday.

Clinton enjoys a cushion of support among the African-American voters that make up a larger portion of the voting populations in delegate-rich southern states like Georgia.
