Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) defended former President Donald Trump‘s campaign strategies and promises after endorsing him as the 2024 Republican nominee.
Rubio appeared on State of the Union on Sunday, during which host Jake Tapper asked the senator to answer for Trump’s recent comments regarding former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley’s husband, Michael Haley, who is a National Guardsman. Trump pointed out how Maj. Michael Haley is “gone” from the campaign trail without mentioning his yearlong deployment in Africa.
“I think they’re part of the increasing nastiness of this campaign and every campaign in American politics,” Rubio said. “It’s just part of these campaign cycles.”
When Tapper attempted to make Rubio answer for his own criticisms of Trump during his 2016 bid, Rubio brushed them off and maintained his support for Trump.
“We were in a campaign,” Rubio said. “Kamala Harris basically suggested Joe Biden was a segregationist. And then she became his vice president.”
Rubio also dismissed concern over Trump’s recent comments regarding a story of a NATO country suggesting it may not pay its dues and how he told the leader that he would not help unless those dues were paid. According to the senator, the comment raised “zero concern” for him.

“Frankly, look, Donald Trump is not a member of the Council on Foreign Relations,” Rubio said. “He doesn’t talk like a traditional politician. We’ve already been through this now. You think people would have figured it out.”
Rubio and fellow Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) endorsed Trump over their state Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who has since dropped out of the race. DeSantis similarly endorsed Trump upon dropping out.
