Speeding crackdown yields more than 7,000 tickets in Va.


Virginia state troopers wrote more than 7,000 tickets during a weekend crackdown on speeders on Interstates 95 and 81.

Troopers stopped 1,475 drivers for speeding, 505 for reckless driving, 14 for impaired driving and 174 for seat belt violations along Interstate 95 Saturday and Sunday.

On Interstate 81, 2,061 drivers were ticketed for speeding, 212 for reckless driving, six for impaired driving and 136 for not wearing seat belts.

Man arrested at National Zoo

Police have arrested a man on a trespassing charge at the National Zoo.

The man was said to be causing a disturbance Saturday outside the elephant habitat, which has been closed for major renovations. Officers escorted the man outside the park in Northwest Washington, but he re-entered and allegedly caused another disturbance.

The man, who is from Washington, was then arrested. A zoo spokeswoman told WRC-TV that the man has psychiatric problems.

‘Big Head’ sentenced for cocaine, mortgage fraud


A 43-year-old Columbia, Md., man was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for drug conspiracy and mortgage fraud.

Shawn Green pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute 330 pounds of cocaine and helping his mother and two partners prepare fake mortgage applications that allowed the conspirators to secure hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans. According to Green’s plea agreement, at least five people identified Green, also known as “Big Head,” as a significant cocaine dealer in the Washington-Baltimore area.

Crack dealer gets 10 years


A 27-year-old Waldorf man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for dealing crack cocaine.

Prosecutors said Jhonte Norris Brawner conspired to distribute crack cocaine from his apartment, including selling more than 100 grams of crack cocaine to an undercover source.
