Metro supervisor jailed for time sheet scheme

A former Metro supervisor was sentenced to jail for falsifying workers’ time sheets, causing the transit agency to pay employees more than $24,500 for hours they didn’t work.

Prince George’s County Circuit Court Judge Larnzell Martin Jr. sentenced 52-year-old Alfred Atanga to one year in jail, with all but 270 days suspended — meaning the former supervisor at a Metro call center in Hyattsville will serve nine months in jail, according to court records. He will be placed on five years probation.

A jury in March convicted Atanga, of Bowie, of theft charges.

Authorities said Atanga, who oversaw the call center’s payroll system, fraudulently submitted time sheets for some employees, which allowed the workers to collect overtime they didn’t earn.

Couple charged with child abuse

A husband and wife from Manassas were arrested in connection with the abuse of a 6-year-old male family member.

Oscar Alfonzo Vasquez Salguero and Leticia Martinez, both 27, were each charged with cruelty and injuries to children, Prince William County police said.

The investigation found Vasquez Salguero struck the boy in the face, and Martinez knew about the abuse but failed to report it to police.

The boy sustained minor injuries.

Elderly women burglarized

Two burglaries with elderly female victims were reported on Anne Arundel County early Monday morning.

A 91-year-old woman woke up to find someone shining a light in her face.

About 10 minutes later, a 74-year-old woman woke up and found a man with a flashlight in her bedroom trying to take her purse.

The woman grabbed the man and screamed, and her son ran into the room and started to fight with the man. A second man also came into the house and had an altercation with the woman’s son before both men fled, officials said.
