Crime History: Bonnie and Clyde kill last victim

On this day, April 6, in 1934, outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow killed their last victim, Oklahoma constable William “Cal” Campbell. Commerce (Olka.) Police Chief Percy Boyd and Constable Campbell, 61, went to investigate a strange car on a muddy road.

Barrow and a henchmen started shooting. Campbell, 61, was killed. Boyd was shot and taken hostage.

In the skirmish, the car got stuck in the mud.

Townsfolk watched helplessly as Campbell lay dying and Barrow tried to get the car out of the mud.

“Boys, one good man has been killed here and if we don’t get this car out of the ditch, some more good men will die,” Barrow reportedly said.

The next day Barrow saw a newspaper story of Campbell’s murder, and said, “Sorry about the old man.”
