On this day, Sept. 2, in 1986, Cathy Evelyn Smith was sentenced to three years in prison for injecting actor-comedian John Belushi with a fatal dose of heroin and cocaine.

Belushi, best known as an original member of “Saturday Night Live” and for his movie roles in “Animal House” and “The Blues Brothers,” died at the Chateau Marmont hotel on Sunset Strip.

Smith, a back-up singer-turned-drug-dealer, had previously been known for her affair with Gordon Lightfoot and had been the inspiration for his 1974 No. 1 hit “Sundown.”

She had supplied heroin to prominent entertainers, and met Belushi on the set of SNL.

At the Hollywood hotel, Smith claims that injected the 33-year-old Belushi with the 83 speedballs, which caused his death.
