Dozens of chickens were killed or are missing from a small farm in Fairfax County.

A neighbor called authorities to report the dead animals on the 5200 block of Winfield Road at about 8 a.m. Thursday, said Lucy Caldwell, a police spokeswoman.

Police said 32 chickens were dead and another 46 are missing. Four birds survived, but suffered trauma, Caldwell said. The surviving chickens were taken to a veterinarian.

The chickens had been housed in a coop behind an electric fence, which was trampled. Caldwell said authorities are trying to figure out what happened to the birds. The most likely culprit, she said, is another animal.

Anyone who sees the chickens should call the police department’s animal control unit at 703-691-2131.
