Crime History: Friend of JFK murdered in Georgetown

On this day, Oct. 12, in 1964, Washington socialite Mary Pinchot Meyer, the former wife of top CIA official Cord Meyer and close friend of President Kennedy, was murdered in Georgetown.

At the time of her death, no one knew about her relationship with the president, and conspiracy theories have since emerged about Kennedy’s presidency and assassination the year before Meyer was killed.

About noon on a perfect autumn day, a mechanic heard a woman’s scream and two gunshots. He looked in the direction of the C&O Canal towpath and saw Meyer, 43, on the ground and a man fleeing from her body.

Police quickly arrested Raymond Crump, who was found soaking wet. The gun was never found. At trial, the judge ruled that Meyer’s private life could not be disclosed.

Crump was acquitted, and Meyer’s slaying remains unsolved.
