WASHINGTON (AP) — A judge has signed an order exonerating a man who spent 22 years in prison for a 1981 rape and robbery he didn’t commit.

The Washington Post reports (http://wapo.st/MtHzK2) D.C. Superior Court Judge Herbert Dixon signed the order Friday. Federal prosecutors joined in a motion last week to vacate the conviction of Kirk Odom, who was cleared of the crime after new DNA testing.

Odom completed his prison term in 2003 but the order frees him from having to register as a sex offender and allows him to seek compensation from the government.

Police say the victim was asleep in her apartment on Capitol Hill Feb. 24, 1981, when a man went into her bedroom and raped her.
