Maryland inmates this summer spruced up a long-neglected playground, part of the state’s efforts to involve prisoners in public works projects. The state Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services said five inmates from the Western Correctional Institution visited the LaVale playground in Allegany County three times to remove trees and weeds from overgrown areas. A civic association member and retired correctional officer had recommended that inmates help clean up the site.
