Woman convicted in daughter’s death

A D.C. Superior Court jury convicted a 33-year-old woman of killing her 7-year-old daughter two years ago.

Carlese Hall stabbed her daughter, Amari, then set their Southeast Washington home on fire on the morning of Dec. 26, 2008, according to prosecutors.

Amari died from a stab wound that punctured her pulmonary artery. Emergency crews found thick smoke when they arrived at the house on the 3300 block of 11th Place SE.

Hall was under the influence of PCP at the time of her arrest, prosecutors said. She could face life in prison without parole.

Man indicted in bomb plot

A Baltimore man was indicted Tuesday in a plot to blow up an armed forces recruiting center in Catonsville.

Antonio Martinez, 21, was arrested in a sting operation on Dec. 8 after authorities say he tried to detonate what he thought were explosives at the recruiting center.

The federal grand jury returned the indictment on Tuesday, charging him with attempting to murder federal officers and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction against federal property.

Prosecutors say he parked a vehicle he thought was full of explosives outside the recruiting center.

Martinez called himself Muhammad Hussain and had recently converted to Islam.

Md. man charged in D.C. homicide

A 39-year-old Brentwood man has been charged in a November shooting death in Northeast Washington.

The Metropolitan Police Department said Tuesday that Reginald Vance has been charged with first-degree murder while armed in the Nov. 12 slaying of 29-year-old Keith Banks. Police said Banks was shot on the 1100 block of Galloway Street NE at about 3 a.m. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
