On this day, July 29, 1999, a day trader, apparently upset over stock losses, opened fire in two Atlanta brokerage offices, killing nine people and wounding 13.

Authorities said Mark O. Barton lost more than $100,000 over the previous two months. Four hours after the shootings, he shot himself at a Georgia gas station.

At his house, authorities found his wife and two children, beaten to death with a hammer. Barton left notes saying he killed his wife on July 27, and his children on July 28.

Barton had been a suspect in a 1993 slaying of his first wife and her mother in Alabama but never charged.
