Flag burner gets probation

An Ocean City woman arrested for flag burning was sentenced to probation. Rebecca McKimmie, 18, pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace and was sentenced to one year probation and a $300 fine. McKimmie was arrested early July 5 after officers observed her lighting an American flag and walking in traffic on Route 50, causing cars to swerve before she extinguished the flag by stomping on it as officers approached.

Man charged with threatening to blow up Metro

A man was indicted on five counts of threatening to blow up the Metro subway system, according to documents filed in federal court. Five times since January, Raymond A. Gray Jr., allegedly called authorities and threatened to damage the system and injure passengers by fire or explosives, according to court filings. The calls were made from D.C. and elsewhere, prosecutors said in charging documents.

Prince George’s Police officer injured in cruiser crash

A Prince George’s County police officer suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries when her cruiser crashed into a pole Wednesday, authorities said. The officer, who was not named, was responding to a “priority call” with her lights and siren when she swerved to avoid a vehicle on Ritchie Road near Sunny Lane in Capitol Heights, police said. The swerve sent the cruiser in a utility pole. It was raining hard at the time of the crash, and police said weather conditions might have been a factor in the crash.

Alexandria water main break closes roads

A 12-inch water main ruptured at 100 S. Reynolds Street in Alexandria on Wednesday morning, closing S. Reynolds Street and Duke Street between the 100 and 200 blocks, officials said. About 600 residents lost water pressure as a result of the break. Officials expected the repairs to take at least eight hours to complete.
